Through an NYFIC Sustainable Textile Innovation Grant to Genspace, Genspace is partnering with Columbia Engineering, and Gotham Foundry, to present Made to Matter: Biofabrication in Fashion, a hands-on workshop exploring the potential of biomaterials in fashion and textiles.

This two day workshop is designed for New York State residents interested in the intersection of fashion, textiles, science, and biomaterial fabrication. No prior experience in science or fashion is required to apply.

Participants will explore sodium alginate, a versatile biomaterial derived from the cell walls of brown seaweed. Alginate can be formed into yarn and other textile materials, offering potential alternatives to conventional synthetic fibers. Through hands-on experimentation, participants will learn how to make alginate biomaterials, evaluate their performance, and develop textile and yarn prototypes through techniques including weaving, crochet, and wet spinning.

The workshop is free to attend through support from an NYFIC Sustainable Textile Innovation Grant, and $200 travel stipends are available to all attendees.

Only 10 spots are available for the October workshop.
