Behind the Twist — Crafting Custom Yarns from New York Fiber

About the Session
Mary Jeanne Packer, founder of Battenkill Fibers, will share insights from her years of experience working with the diverse range of fibers grown across New York State. Drawing on her deep understanding of fiber properties, blending, and spinning techniques, Mary Jeanne will discuss how she collaborates with farmers, designers, and brands to create custom yarns that meet each client’s vision for feel, performance, and purpose.

She’ll touch on her journey in building Battenkill Fibers and focus on what she’s learned through years of hands-on experimentation and innovation in the mill—transforming raw fiber into yarns that truly showcase the character of local breeds.

You’ll come away with:

  • A deeper understanding of how different New York fibers behave during blending and spinning

  • Insights into matching fiber characteristics with desired yarn qualities

  • Practical knowledge of mill processes that influence texture, durability, and design outcomes

  • Inspiration for how farmers, makers, and mills can collaborate to create exceptional regional yarns

No matter your role in the fiber community—farmer, maker, mill, researcher, or designer—this is a chance to learn, share, and connect with one of New York’s leading voices in artisanal fiber production.
